Do you know what you are publishing?



Most creators of web content never understand one of the most fundamental facts about the Internet – it isn't real! Now I know you are probably having a problem accepting this statement, however it is one of the most important web publishing facts, so let me elaborate.

The intangible nature of web publishing ...



When we publish web content (and many other forms of digital content), we are publishing data rather than a physical object. Of course you knew this already, but have you stopped to consider in detail what this means. Your 'publication' does not occur until the data is 'assembled' through some form of software on some form of computerized device. Still underwhelmed by the power of this insight, well please stick with me and we will take a closer look at the profound impact that this simple difference has, on a page inspired by the 1999 film - The Matrix - called there is no spoon!

After that, we look at how web publishers need to address the specific dynamics of the web as a background to this website's sections on structure, design and message. Sticking with 'The Matrix' analogy, we have titled this bending the spoon.
